이미 크뇌벨의 회화와 조각을 넘나드는 작품은 색과 구조 사이의 관계를 탐구한다. 크뇌벨은 요제프 보이스(Joseph Beuys)와 카지미르 말레비치(Kasimir Malevish), 바넷 뉴면(Barnet Newman) 등 서양미술사의 주요 거장들의 예술적 이론과 실현 양식을 자신만의 방식으로 해석하고 수용하며 자기 고유의 독창적인 조형 세계를 구축했다. 이미 크뇌벨은 캔버스의 제한적인 틀을 해체하고 섬유보드나 나무로 제작한 7각형과 같은 변이된 형태 속에서 다채로운 색상의 다양성을 추구했으며, 더 나아가 새로운 재료에 대한 가능성과 회화 형태의 자율성에 집중했다. 회화와 조각의 경계를 넘나들며 기하학적 또는 유기적 형태의 작품들을 작업해온 이미 크뇌벨은 건축적인 추상화의 독자적인 영역을 개척하며 현대 회화 양식에 새로운 담론을 제시하였다.

 

Imi Knoebel’s minimalist hybrids of painting and sculpture explore relationships between color and structure. Knoebel’s nonrepresentational works innovate on the modernist ideas and styles of Joseph Beuys, Kasimir Malevich, and the Bauhaus; the artist is interested in seriality, spare geometries, reductive color, and the use of industrial materials such as Masonite. Knoebel studied under Beuys at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and under László Moholy-Nagy at the Werkkunstschule Darmstadt; he has exhibited in Berlin, New York, Paris, Zürich, Tokyo, London, Vienna, and Rome. His work belongs in the collections of the Essl Museum, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, the Museo Reina Sofía, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Modern Art. While Knoebel is best known for his sculptural paintings, his practice also involves drawing, photography, projections, and installation. His work has sold for six figures at auction.
